About MusicXML files... (coming soon to StringLibrary!)
MusicXML is an open, XML-based music notation file format. It stands for Music Extensible Markup Language. Originally developed by Michael Good at Recordare LLC, MusicXML development is currently managed by MakeMusic (the makers of Finale). MusicXML 3.0 was released in August 2011.
MusicXML was designed for sharing sheet music files between various applications (open-source or commercial), and for archiving sheet music files for use in the future. MusicXML files are readable and usable by a wide range of music notation, music OCR, and sequencer programs. For a list of music notation programs that can open/export MusicXML files, please see here.
Just as MP3 files have become synonymous with sharing recorded music, and MIDI files for use with synthesizers, MusicXML has become the standard for sharing interactive sheet music. With MusicXML you can create sheet music in one program and share it as an MusicXML file – back and forth – with others using a different program (Sibelius <-> Finale <-> MuseScore, etc.).
The MusicXML format retains and exports significantly more information from the original file that can be used in the importing program than the MIDI format commonly used for this task before the arrival of MusicXML. Transposition and editing, customization and personalization are all possible after importing a MusicXML file into the music notation program of your choice.
StringLibrary recommends Sibelius (commercial) and MuseScore (free) music notation programs.
